Artist Statement

Art has the power to heal... Art has the power to enlighten... Art enables me to express thoughts and emotions when I can't find the words... Art enables me to overcome language barriers and cross cultural boundaries. I create with the conviction that my art is a positive expression of transcendental energy.

The creation of powerful, positive images requires introspection... an inward journey and the ability to face both the positive and negative aspects of life, experience, personality and the world. The process of creation then becomes an excavation of self... searching for more complex questions as well as answers to those questions. By layering paint, handmade paper, epherma, beads, fabrics, and fibers, I create art in which some of the images created remain visible while others become fragmented, distorted, veiled or buried. The result is complex and multi-layered in the same way that life is complex and multi-layered.

During this inward journey, questions arise regarding materiality, visibility, presence, and aesthetics. What should remain visible and what should be hidden from view? How do society and our culture control our perception? How does this perception affect our view of reality and illusion? What is the relationship between beauty and healing? Beauty and enlightenment? Healing and enlightenment? I believe beauty emerges and enlightenment is achieved when the viewer experiences a journey where they can question, explore, and discover their own truth. Whatever that truth may be.
